Scala Court

  • Location: Oldfield Park, Bath
  • Contractor: Spec Projects Ltd
  • Requirements: A lightweight solution to provide a brick finish and whole bricks.
  • Solution: P-Clad
  • Architects: Ferguson Mann Architects

The Scala project is a large mixed use development in the popular student area of Oldfield Park Bath. The wider project included three different buildings; a new residential mews, a new student residential block, and the extension and redevelopment of the existing 1920s Scala cinema building.

Part of the old building was demolished to make way for the new student accommodation block which was designed by architects Ferguson Mann to fit in with the style of the surrounding residential buildings. The 3-storey new build provides student accommodation including a total of 72 student rooms.

We supplied Bristol based contractor, Spec Projects with 900m2 of whole bricks for the project together with 224m2 of our P-Clad system and specially cut brick slips for the triangular oriel type windows. P-Clad is lightweight compared to traditionally constructed masonry which made the distinctive window design details possible.

We arranged for the required number of brick slips and corner pieces to be cut from the whole bricks and be delivered to site, ensuring a consistent finish between the windows and the rest of the building.

The building was constructed using a stretcher bond pattern with large areas of soldier courses to create an attractive effect with the brickwork. The chosen colour of the buff multi brick finish complements Bath’s famous Bathstone colour palette.
